				<title>FMA Foundation director Boyd Coddington&amp;#8212;A life  celebrated</title>
				<link>http://www.fma-foundation.org/News/blog/client/index.cfm/2008/2/28/FMA-Foundation-director-Boyd-Coddington8212A-life--celebrated</link>
				<description>

				Everyone at the Fabricators &amp;amp; Manufacturers Association Foundation is saddened by the untimely death of a key member of its board of directors. Car-building legend Boyd Coddington passed away early Wednesday morning, Feb. 27, at a hospital in Whittier, Calif.
Founder of Boyd&apos;s Wheels and designer of prize-winning custom cars, Coddington won the prestigious &quot;America&apos;s Most Beautiful Roadster&quot; award seven times and was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show and Street Rod Marketing Alliance Halls of Fame. Boyd set a standard for workmanship and creativity with his popular &quot;Cadzilla&quot; creation, considered a design masterpiece. The customized car, based on a 1950s Cadillac, was built for rocker Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.
Through his cable TV reality show, &quot;American Hot Rod,&quot; Boyd continuously introduced sheet metal work to the mainstream public.
&quot;Boyd joined our board in October, and we were excited about  working with this industry guru who so enthusiastically shared his love of metalworking,&quot;  said FMA Foundation Director Terrence Egan. &quot;Besides being one of the  winningest hot rod builders of all time, he was my good friend who constantly  amazed me with his creativity. My condolences go out to his wife, Jo, his  family, and his employees.&quot;
Boyd also supported numerous philanthropic causes through his Boyd Coddington Foundation serving children with disabilities and kids who are terminally ill. He also took under his wing a number of individuals with Down Syndrome, training and employing them in his business.

  &quot;Boyd&apos;s work with children was an inspiration.&quot; said FMA  President &amp;amp; CEO Gerald Shankel. &quot;FMA is proud to have been associated with  so creative an artisan in our industry, and so generous a philanthropist. We&apos;re  grateful for his brief time with us.&quot;
Boyd, 63, had been hospitalized twice recently for a medical condition, but was thought to have been in recovery.
Funeral services have been set for Wednesday, March 5, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in La Habra, with a reception to follow that afternoon at Boyd Coddington Hot Rods and Collectibles.

				<description>

				Hundreds of festival attendees visited the FMA Foundation booth at On the Waterfront in Rockford, Ill., last weekend to view the bobber style motorcycle designed by Matt Hotch, and buy a raffle ticket to try and win that one-of-a-kind cycle. Only one person went home a winner, Lukasz Dubienczuk of Loves Park, Ill.

When the call went out to Dubienczuk from FMA Foundation director, Terrence Egan, he couldnt believe it was real. I had to really convince him I wasnt just a friend who was playing a prank, Egan said. Once he realized the call was legitimate, he was thrilled about winning.

The proceeds from the raffle will be used to fund scholarships for students who are studying to pursue careers in manufacturing. Scholarships are awarded for both college-degree programs and trade school programs. In 2007 twenty-nine scholarships were awarded by the Fabricators &amp;amp; Manufacturers Association and its Foundation, totaling more than $125,000.

				<title>John Ratzenberger Announces National Manufacturing Camp Grant Winners</title>
				<link>http://www.fma-foundation.org/News/blog/client/index.cfm/2007/3/7/John-Ratzenberger-Announces-National-Manufacturing-Camp-Grant-Winners</link>
				<description>

				ROCKFORD, Ill., Feb. 26 Host of the Travel Channel&apos;s &quot;John Ratzenberger&apos;s Made in America&quot; and former Cheers star John Ratzenberger announced at a press conference here today the national winners of the manufacturing camp grants awarded jointly by the Fabricators &amp; Manufacturers Association Foundation (FMAF) and the Nuts, Bolts &amp; Thingamajigs Foundation (NBTF).

Nineteen grants, ranging from $2,500 to $5,000, were awarded to not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions that offer overnight or day camp experiences that introduce young people ages 12 to 16 to careers in manufacturing and engineering.

The recipients were named at FMA headquarters in Rockford, Ill., by Ratzenberger, television personality and co-founder of NBTF, a charitable organization dedicated to introducing young people to the pleasures of tinkering, creating the next generation of artisans, inventors, engineers, repairmen and skilled workers, and Terrence Egan, director of the FMA Foundation, an educational, research and charitable organization that promotes metal forming and fabricating technology in manufacturing.

Two grant winners - the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Business Employment Skills Team, Inc., in Peru, Ill., had representatives on hand to receive a ceremonial, enlarged check during the event.

Additional grant winners announced are:

 Sterling Park Day Camp, Bridgeport, Conn.
 Gadsden State Community College, Gadsden, Ala.
 National Park Community College, Hot Springs, Ark.
 Mid-South Community College, West Memphis, Ark.
 Heart of Georgia Technical College, Dublin, Ga.
 Ogeechee Technical College, Statesboro, Ga.
 Southern Maine Community College, South Portland, Maine
 Enterprise Group Community Ventures, Jackson, Mich.
 Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Kalamazoo, Mich.
 Van Buren Intermediate School District, Lawrence, Mich.
 St. Cloud Technical College, St. Cloud, Minn.
 Ulster Boces, New Paltz, N.Y.
 Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton, Va.
 Lake Washington Technical College, Kirkland, Wash.
 Nicolet Area Technical College, Rhinelander, Wis.
 Coosa Valley Technical College, Rome, Ga.
 Griffin Technical College, Griffin, Ga.

Today, too few young people develop the kind of manual skills required by industries, workshops and engineering practices, said Ratzenberger. Through these grants, we strive to influence young people to the pleasures of tinkering that can lead to careers in production and manufacturing.

A demographic shift in the U.S. workforce caused by retiring baby boomers is occurring, and the manufacturing sector is already feeling the impact. There is an ever-increasing demand for highly skilled professionals who can design, program and operate technology, according to Ratzenberger.

The purpose of the manufacturing camp grants is to provide a positive, hands-on experience so young people will consider manufacturing as a career option, said Egan. Were making an investment in the workforce of tomorrow. This is critical to the economy of the cities where the camps occur and to the nation in general.

The camps target youth at the critical level of secondary education, exposing them to math, science and engineering principles, and giving them opportunities to see the technology being used in industry and the high level of skills that will be required from the workforce.

These camps provide youth with the exposure to vocational and technical trades that no longer exist in all public education systems, added Egan. Inspiring youth to consider these trades will have a positive effect on graduation rates, increase the chance for them to earn a living wage, and create a more qualified workforce and community development in impoverished areas.

About Nuts, Bolts &amp; Thingamajigs Foundation

The mission of the Nuts, Bolts &amp; Thingamajigs Foundation is to avert a growing crisis in America, one that is occurring because too few young people now develop the kind of manual skills required by industries, workshops and engineering practices. Through mentoring programs, education and media awareness, NBTF seeks to introduce young people to the pleasures of tinkering. Create three-dimensional design on a computer (CAD), transfer the design to a computer numeric control (CNC) machine, take the finished product home after being built, and tour local companies to see if you can do this for a good living! Sound exciting for a teen?

This is the basic premise of seven manufacturing camps being funded by the FMA Foundation this summer. The following ten camps were selected among 17 applicants nationwide:

Camp MetalHead will be an innovative industrial arts camp conducted by Woonasquatucket Valley Community Build (The Steel Yard), Providence, RI. Students age 15 to 16 years old will receive hands-on instruction in the metal arts, field trips to industrial floors and production artists&amp;rsquo; studios, an introduction to product research and design, and will fabricate and install a piece of urban furniture made of steel.

Engineering &amp; Technology Academy is an existing but growing program hosted by Ferris State University College of Technology, Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State will expand its existing program to target 80 eighth- and ninth-grade students.

				Winnebago, Ill. &amp;ndash; Winnovation, a high school robotics team from Winnebago, Ill., participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta last weekend. The competition was the climax to weeks of competition involving more than 1,130 teams from the United States and six other nations: Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Winnovation was a finalist in the Galileo Division at the championship. The competition aired on the NASA channel and also received some coverage from CNN.

The FMA Foundation, FMA&amp;rsquo;s charitable foundation, awarded Winnovation a $3,000 grant to help the team compete at the FIRST Robotics Competition.

The mission of the Foundation is to serve as a charitable organization specifically to provide funding for training, grants, scholarships, research, and publishing information relating to the sector of the manufacturing community which utilizes metal forming, fabricating, and product assembly.
